![]() Cuisine and traditions of the peoples of Guyana22 September 2017 | Friday Home-made cuisine and food of Guyana amazes with its refinement, unusual and unique taste. It reflects the heavy, sometimes tragic fate of this amazing and beautiful country. The historical vicissitudes caused the fact that in the local cuisine and food the Dutch and Indian, British and African, Spanish and local Indian national features are reflected. The combination of local traditions and rules in the preparation of dishes with national traits(which were brought by settlers from distant lands, colonizers and conquerors) gives that unique and unsurpassed style in food. The main ingredients in the preparation of local home-made food are: beef, seafood, rice, amazing for us vegetables and fruits, which are grown by local farms and form the basis of farm products. Considering the large volume of fresh water resources, river fish has a special position. Rice is a basis for variety of dishes, including Indian cakes roti. This is exactly what was "purchased" by the local cuisine from the settlers from Asia. For breakfast and lunch local people, as a rule, have the simplest meal, in particular they like to eat sandwiches, beans in spicy sauce, dairy products. And the evening dinner is a more complicated procedure, which combines the traditions of many countries and continents. The familiar local curry dish is obviously derived from distant India. In Guyana there are a lot of different types of curry. There is curry from poultry, meat, lamb, deer. There is curry from a palm tree, and this dish, obviously, has its roots in China. Here, pumpkin milk soup, pea and flour tortillas with spices, roasted chicken bhunjal (from the title we can see its Indian origin), all kinds of rice pies, butter-fried flour balls, fruit caramel and many other dishes from Asia are common in home-made food. In Guyana, traditional Chinese home-cooked dishes are widely used: noodles, scrambled eggs, fish in spicy sauce, meat, etc. Here Africa is reflected in such food as fo-fo or fu-fu. Despite its strange name, it's just an amazingly delicious banana dessert. Another delicious dish from the black continent is "jellyabia". It is made from sour milk with sugar and small buns, "jerk-rub" is meat of several kinds, fried in thick paste, containing onions, herbs and spices. And also the local jelly jujube, which is familiar even for us, is prepared from local natural ingredients and fruits. Well, the most popular dish, which is served in restaurants and hotels, is "pepperpot". This dish came to this amazing country from India. It is a stew with a lot of seasonings, which in other countries can not even be found. Considering the favorable climate of Guyana, as well as the large number of farms that produce fruits, residents like to drink freshly squeezed juices, especially those derived from papaya and cloves. There is also an amazing in its aroma and quality coffee, which is also adored by locals. The rum produced in Guyana is known all over the world. Such brand as "Demerara" is considered one of the best. The local farmers cultivate grapes in a small number. Later this grape is used to obtain a wine with unique taste.
