Dishes of the Mariana Islands

Not everyone can immediately show these islands on the map. But at the same time home cooking and culinary traditions are at the highest level in this place. Generally speaking, we can say that local cuisine is an amazing mixture of traditional dishes of Korea, Spain and Japan. Local people eat mainly seafood with amazing sauces.

The most popular local dishes include shrimp kelogvin. In addition to shrimp, this dish has the following ingredients: coconut pulp, salt and local hot pepper from Tinian Island. That pepper is one of the sharpest peppers on the planet.

On these islands there live unique Chamorro people. For big holidays, social events, other significant events, they prepare a dish called the mind – it's a young pig, cooked on the hot rocks in an earthen pit. Before beginning the cooking, they wrap the piglet in banana leaves. As a result they have excellent and tender meat.

And it’s clear that we won’t be able to find there farmers and farm products in our usual understanding, as there is the water around. Almost all local residents participate in fishing and seafood production. The caught fish is marinated in local coconut milk, and, once again is wrapped in banana leaves, and only then it is cooked on coal.

From Japan local residents have got a home-made dish “sashimi”, which is also prepared from fish. People dip small pieces of fish in the sauce (including wasabi), and eat together with a garnish of rice.

There is the annual festival "Taste of the Mariana Islands" every Saturday in may. At this festival everyone can try a huge number of local dishes and enjoy the tastes of these amazing islands and their unique home cooking.
